A tense situation prevailed at the collectorate here on Monday as the agitation organised by B.Ed students protesting against the conduct of the teacher eligibility test (TET) for the last few days, turned violent.
The agitating students attacked the collectorate, damaging the window panes. Police had to resort to a lathicharge to disperse the agitating students and people who came to the collectorate to submit their grievances to the district collector ran in fear.
It may be recalled that BEd students are agitating for the last few days, protesting against the conduct of the TET and demanding that state government allow B.Ed students to appear for the SGT exam.
Student organisations gave a call for a ‘Lay siege to the collectorate’ on Monday. Responding to this, students gathered in large numbers at the collectorate, blocked the roads and prevented employees and people who came to submit grievances from entering the collectorate premises.
The district collector, Mr Ramshankar Naik, who was conducting a praja darbar came to know about the agitation and sent an invitation to the students, asking them to submit their memorandum. Police invited a group of student representatives to meet the collector.
Students jumped the gates and pelted stones at the office, damaging the window panes of the front portion. Some policemen stood guard for the collector who expressed anger at the police for failing to control the students.
With the situation going out of control, police resorted to a lathicharge and dispersed the students, Several students were injured in the lathicharge, while police took 15 students into custody. Even as the situation was returning to normal, another group of students tried to barge into the collectorate, forcing police to resort to a lathicharge gain. Protesting against the lathicharge, students pelted stones.
The situation came under control after the DSP, Ms Madhuri, warned the students of serious action if they did not stop pelting stones. With the arrival of a large contingent of police, the students dispersed from the place.
Later, condemning the attack on the collectorate, the district collector, Mr Ramshankar Naik, refused to take the memorandum from the students. “Students can stage a peaceful agitation for their future but it is not proper to attack offices. How is it possible to take a representation after they act like criminals
” he asked. He said that the issue was under the consideration of state government and the latter will find a solution to the problem.
